Understanding Your Paycheck

Your net salary (take-home pay) is your gross salary minus all taxes and deductions. Here's what affects your paycheck:

Federal Income Tax

The U.S. uses a progressive tax system with brackets ranging from 10% to 37%. Your rate depends on your income and filing status.

State Income Tax

Most states charge income tax, ranging from 1% to 13%. Nine states have no income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming.

FICA Taxes

  • Social Security: 6.2% on income up to $168,600 (2024 limit)
  • Medicare: 1.45% on all income, plus 0.9% on income over $200,000

Pre-Tax Deductions

Contributions to retirement accounts (401k, IRA) and health savings accounts (HSA) reduce your taxable income, lowering your tax burden.

Tips to Maximize Take-Home Pay

  1. Maximize pre-tax contributions to 401(k) and HSA
  2. Claim all eligible deductions and tax credits
  3. Adjust W-4 withholding to avoid overpaying
  4. Consider tax-advantaged benefits like FSA and transit benefits
